Note: On Sunday 18 Mar 2018, Department of Home Affairs announced that the Temporary Work (SC457) program has been replaced by the TSS (SC482) program.
Current SC457 Holders Transitional Arrangements (Various Scenarios)
457 to PR: Temporary Residence Transition (TRT)
If you held a SC457 (or had applied for and were subsequently granted) before 18 April 2017, then you are eligible to apply for Permanent Residence via the TRT stream if the below requirements are met:
SC457 granted on or after 18 April 2017
If you were granted a SC457 in a Short Term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL) occupation, you would have been granted a two year SC457
There are two further options of renewal available:
Any SC457 renewals post 18 March 2018 will have to be on the recently announced TSS.
Lodging a new TSS (SC482) Application
This is the most commonly used program by Australian employers to sponsor overseas workers to work in Australia on a temporary basis.
Are you eligible?
The major difference that has been introduced by the Department of Home Affairs in the new TSS program is that you need to have at least two years of full-time paid work experience in the occupation.
You also need to meet the skills requirement, English language requirement and meet the health & character requirements. Besides, there needs to be the minimum salary on offer along with any caveat requirements to be met. The sponsoring employer must also undertake labour market testing and meet the Training Benchmark requirements (until the new Skilling Australians Fund (SAF) comes into effect).
Short Term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL)
If you are nominated for a TSS in an occupation on the STSOL, you will be granted a two-year TSS with the option of two further two-year renewals.
Please note that there is no permanent residence (PR) pathway for TSS holders on the STSOL occupations.
Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL)
If you are nominated for a TSS in an occupation on the MLTSSL, you will be granted a four-year TSS. You will be eligible to transition to a permanent residence (PR) after completion of three years on your TSS, and if your employer is willing to nominate you for this.
The Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) results in a permanent residence visa for the sponsored employee and any dependant family members. This visa is for Australian employers who want to sponsor highly skilled workers for a permanent visa to work in their business in Australia. The employee can be either a highly skilled worker from overseas or a highly skilled temporary visa holder currently in Australia.
ENS Pathways
There are three possible pathways for an TSS (SC457) holder:

The Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme or RSMS is a permanent employer sponsored visa which requires a job offer in a Regional Area of Australia.
The RSMS results in a permanent residence visa for the sponsored employee and any dependant family members. This is for Australian employers who want to sponsor highly skilled workers for a permanent visa to work in their business located in regional areas of Australia. The employee can be either a highly skilled worker from overseas or a highly skilled temporary visa holder currently in Australia.

The RSMS is a more advantageous sponsored visa than the ENS due to:
Temporary Work Visa (SC457)
This is the popular temporary work visa which has been replaced by the Temporary Skills Shortage (TSS) as on 18 March 2018.
The SC457 was for employers who wanted to employ overseas workers to fill nominated skilled positions in Australia for a period of up to four years.
This program is no longer in place.
As the name suggests, the Short Stay Specialist is a short stay visa for skilled professionals undertaking highly specialised work or work that is in Australia's national interest.
Two streams:
The Training Visa is a temporary visa for graduates and skilled workers to obtain occupational training or professional development in Australia.
Two Visa Stages:
Two Streams:
Occupational Trainees
This stream requires a nomination by the Australian sponsor to do one of the following activities in Australia:
Professional Development
This stream requires the applicant to be working overseas in a professional or management position. Training is primarily classroom based and would need to be skills relevant to your overseas position.
For both the streams, the applicant needs to have access to sufficient funds to support themselves in Australia and have personal attributes consistent with the proposed activity. They must genuinely intend to stay temporarily for the purpose in Australia and meet health and character requirements.
