For the current financial year, the Government has allocated:

These caps have been introduced under Section 85(1)(b) of the Migration Act 1958, which allows the Government to regulate the number of visas granted each year based on available planning levels and program capacity.

Why These Limits Are Important

Due to the consistently high demand in the family visa streams, the Government uses annual caps to manage application volumes and ensure smoother processing. This method has been part of the program management since 2011, allowing for better planning and prioritisation.

Impact on Applicants

If the number of applications exceeds the allocated quota for this financial year, those additional applications will be rolled over into the next program year’s quota. This means longer processing times and extended wait periods for some applicants.

Advisory for Applicants and Migration Advisors

For individuals and migration agents assisting with family visa applications, these updates highlight the need for early planning and realistic timelines. Being aware of the capped numbers can help set the right expectations and prepare accordingly.

Summary:

The Australian Government has announced visa caps for the 2024–25 financial year under a new legislative instrument. The allocations include 6,800 Contributory Parent visas, 1,700 Parent visas, and 500 Other Family visas. These limits are set to manage high demand and maintain efficient processing. Applications exceeding the yearly cap will be carried over to the next program year. Migration professionals and applicants are advised to plan early and manage expectations accordingly.
