The Australian government has unveiled a comprehensive plan to reform and improve settlement services for refugees and migrants, aiming to foster better economic and social outcomes for these communities. With a funding commitment of $120.9 million over five years from 2023–24, this initiative represents a significant investment in supporting the successful integration of newcomers into Australian society.
Key components of the funding include:
- $86.6 million for the Humanitarian Settlement Program: This funding will support the delivery of settlement services tailored to the needs of refugees and migrants, helping them navigate the challenges of resettlement and achieve positive outcomes.
- $27.0 million for targeted support:
- Youth Transition Support services: Aimed at assisting refugee and migrant youth in accessing education, employment, and government services to facilitate their successful transition into adulthood.
- Specialised support for refugee and migrant women: Specifically addressing domestic and family violence issues through the Settlement Engagement and Transition Support (SETS) Program, recognizing the unique challenges faced by women in these communities.
- Settlement support for Afghan humanitarian entrants: Providing tailored assistance to Afghan refugees to support their settlement journey in Australia.
- $3.8 million for conversational English classes in Community Hubs: Continuing to offer language support to enhance communication skills and promote social integration within migrant communities.
- $1.9 million to extend Medicare access for Ukrainians: Ensuring continued healthcare access for Ukrainians and their immediate family members holding a Bridging visa E until 30 June 2027.
- $1.0 million to extend the Community Refugee Integration and Settlement Pilot: This initiative supports settlement services provided by community volunteers, recognizing their valuable role in assisting newcomers.
- $0.6 million to enhance management of humanitarian settlement programs: Strengthening the Department of Home Affairs’ capacity to manage and deliver effective humanitarian settlement services.
These measures align with the National Plan to End Violence Against Women and Children 2022–32, reflecting the government’s commitment to addressing broader social challenges and promoting inclusive, supportive communities.
